      Volunteer tutors recognized

SAYREVILLE — Literacy Programs of New Jersey honored its volunteer tutors during its recent holiday party.

The organization, based on Washington Road, recognized 25 tutors whose years of service ranged from one to 11 years. Tutors work throughout Middlesex County with adult learners who lack English literacy skills. Tutoring is performed in diverse settings, such as small groups consisting of two to five students, classes consisting of five to 10 students, conversation groupsÄ consisting of 10 to 15 students, or one on one.

The holiday dinner is an opportunity to thank volunteer tutors in person and to present them with certificates recognizing their efforts. Throughout the evening, tutors interacted with one another by exchanging ideas and helpful hints about tutoring. During the dinner, ESL textbooks and workbooks, recommended by a tutor, were awarded as raffle prizes. The event gives tutors an open forum to discuss their successes and failures and to receive feedback from peers. With the new addition of a tutor resource website, tutors can also access documents and books they find helpful in tutoring basic literacy and English as a second language.
