DuPont donation will support camp for Sayreville brain-injured children

SAYREVILLE — DuPont is donating $10,000 to the Sayreville Association for Brain Injured Children (SABIC) to support the development of a new picnic pavilion at the site of the association’s future summer camp on Cheesequake Road in Parlin.

DuPont has been in operation in Parlin since 1904.

Ten new picnic tables, compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and made entirely of recycled material, will provide seating for 60 to 80 special-needs people. DuPont employees will install the tables and will also donate a flagpole for the new SABIC camp and assist in construction of the camp, with painting and landscaping activities.

“It’s truly wonderful that DuPont is not only donating resources, but their employees are also giving their own personal time to assemble and install these picnic tables for us,” said Maryann Gordon, director of SABIC. “This is a great start to SABIC’s relationship with DuPont and we look forward to being their neighbors in Sayreville since our new facility will be located adjacent to DuPont’s Sayreville plant.”

An event to celebrate the donation will be held at the site in the near future with members of SABIC, special-needs campers and their families, DuPont employees and dignitaries.

“SABIC is an extremely important program in Parlin, providing recreational activities for area children with special needs,” said Dave Steward, site manager of DuPont. “Our employee volunteers look forward to working with the association to create a beautiful camp space for these special children.”

DuPont provides financial support to a wide variety of charitable organizations in the counties and communities near the plant. Many DuPont employees also volunteer their time and talents on behalf of multiple causes. Some of the community groups in Parlin that DuPont has supported in the past include Sayreville Education Advisory Committee, Sayreville VFW Post 4699, Sayreville Domestic Violence Response Team, Sayreville First Aid Squad and Middlesex County Chiefs of Police.

Alex Scocco, a Sayreville resident and parent of a brain-injured child, founded the Sayreville Association for Brain Injured Children in 1968. Scocco understood the special needs these children required for learning and development. He also recognized that few opportunities existed for “his children” in 1968, so he began a group then known as BIC (Brain Injured Children) to provide educational and recreational activities for brain-injured children and adults.
