Former cop dies in hit-and-run

SAYREVILLE -- A former Old Bridge police officer was killed in a hit-and-run accident while crossing Route 9 on foot last week.

Peter J. Ewtushek, 35, of the Parlin section of Sayreville, was struck on the southbound side of the highway in the area of the Checkers restaurant in Sayreville at 10:10 p.m. Nov. 23, according to a press release from the Sayreville Police Department.

Ewtushek was pronounced dead at Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy as a result of injuries.

Old Bridge police confirmed that Ewtushek served with the department but was no longer working there.

A lifelong resident of the Sayreville and South Amboy area, Ewtushek was a graduate of Sayreville War Memorial High School and Monmouth University, West Long Branch.

According to his obituary, Ewtushek is survived by his mother, Maureen Grover, of Parlin; a stepbrother, Robert K. Grover Jr., of Sayreville; and stepsisters Annmarie Carlton, of North Carolina, and Judith Pitsios, of South Amboy.

Ewtushek's stepfather, Robert K. Grover, a retired Sayreville police officer, died last year.

Police had little information about the vehicle that struck Ewtushek, other than saying that it was a passenger vehicle that would have sustained front-end damage.

Any possible witnesses to the Thanksgiving night hit-and-run accident are asked to contact Patrolman David Sivilli at (732) 525-5430 or Sgt. John Bartlinski at (732) 525-5431 of the Sayreville Police Department, or Sgt. Kenneth Mazza of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office at (732) 745-3300.
